Matthew Hotton – BSc, MSc, DClinPsy 

Research Tutor 

Dr Matthew (Matt) Hotton has been a Research Tutor at OXICPTR since August 2020. He also works as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist based in Oxford, leading psychological services for people born with cleft lip and/or palate, facial palsy or other craniofacial conditions.

Matt serves as Lead for Research Quality Enhancement and Continuing Professional Development at the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research. In this role he supports the continued development of those supervising trainee clinical psychology research projects. Matt also leads on the programme’s support for trainees with a disability.

Matt’s clinical and research interests include working with people experiencing visible difference resulting from congenital or acquired physical health conditions. To date, his research in this area has focused on understanding the psychosocial outcomes of people born with cleft lip and/or palate, craniofacial conditions and facial palsy, as well as identifying interventions to improve psychological wellbeing and adjustment to these conditions. 

Matt has previously been the recipient of two research grants provided by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust Foundation, supporting his research into improving the psychological wellbeing of people with facial palsy through self-guided psychological interventions, and has chaired an international task-force in collaboration with Facial Palsy UK, focussing on designing clinical guidelines for the psychological support of people with facial palsy. He is also currently a co-applicant at the NIHR-funded Cleft@18-23 project, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Bristol.

He is a BABCP-accredited and integrates cognitive behavioural approaches into his clinical practice where appropriate.
