Neil has been a Research Tutor at OXICPTR since March 2022, contributing to the research component of clinical psychology training, as well as teaching CBT.
Neil completed his PhD in Psychology in 2002 at the University of Leeds, researching how patients make decisions about their healthcare. He then went on to hold a number of research posts in academia and industry (including the BBC in London) before qualifying as a clinical psychologist in 2014 at the University of Bath. After qualifying, Neil worked in NHS secondary care adult mental health services using cognitive-behavioural approaches (CBT, ACT, CFT) with service users experiencing severe and enduring mental health problems (psychosis, bipolar disorder) as well as anxiety disorders (OCD, health anxiety, social phobia, PTSD) and depression. He also worked on a mental health rehabilitation ward providing supervision, team formulation, consultation, and training to ward staff as well as individual and group work with service users.
Neil is a fully accredited CBT therapist with the BABCP and has completed training in providing supervision of CBT for psychosis. He remained research active while working in clinical roles in the NHS and continues to publish this work. Neil’s research interests are primarily focussed on anxiety disorders, in particular health anxiety in adults with long-term health conditions (MS, Chronic Pain etc.). He is also interested in researching the impact of insomnia on mental health.
