Judith Kalthoff

Clinical Tutor

Before recently joining the course team as a clinical tutor, I worked for 10 years in the local paediatrics team at the John Radcliffe Hospital (part of Oxford University Hospitals – OUH) and helped to set up the Psychological Medicine Staff Support Service following the Covid pandemic. I graduated from the IOP in 2011 and have been working within multi-disciplinary teams ever since. I regard it as a privilege to support individuals, young people and their families when times feel challenging and I strongly believe in holistic and compassionate care.

In my clinical work, I prefer to use a range of approaches (e.g. CBT, CFT, Brief Solution Focused Therapy) and I see therapy and supervision as a collaborative process. I enjoy teaching and training and learning from others. Over the past few years, I have tried to learn a new skill each year (sadly, less successful at times as I still can’t change a flat bike tyre).

I strongly believe in treating everybody with integrity and respect and I am curious about the diversity of cultures (I grew up in Germany and moved to the UK in my late 20s) and how it shapes our society and the communities we live in. I am one of the founding members of the ACP-UK Staff Health and Wellbeing EDI network group.

My clinical and research interests include clinical health psychology, palliative care (paediatrics and across the life span), bereavement, loss & grief, staff wellbeing (e.g. in relation to neurodiversity and compassion fatigue), team functioning (healthcare and forensic settings) and issues around moral injury and moral distress. I am also very passionate about clinical ethics and am a member of the Clinical Ethics Advisory Group (CEAG) at OUH.
